The State of Our Humanity

In August 2017, President Donald J. Trump approved fresh sanctions on Russia after Congress showed overwhelming bipartisan support for the new measures. 99.04% of Congress passed the bill in response to Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, as well as its human rights violations, annexation of Crimea, and military operations in eastern Ukraine.

On January 29, 2018, the Trump administration failed to impose those sanctions.

This is the President of the United States refusing to enforce a law that was presented to him by Congress and he signed.

We are living in very serious times. The constitutional crisis by this President has drastic repercussions to the foundations of this country. Many nations, governments, and empires have fallen even after existing much longer than the 242 years the United States has. Do not believe that we are any more impervious just because we are living in it right now.

The Romans lived through the fall of their empire.

Things are changing, rapidly, and what happens in the coming days will determine the very existence of the United States of America.

America’s strength has always been in its institutions. The Trump administration has done nothing but attack them from day one. That can only last so long before things begin to collapse on themselves.

This is a turning point in history, the moments we decide our fates. The State of the Union tonight is an opportunity for Democrats and Republicans of Congress who maintain their integrity to let the world know how they feel about this country, how they will stand against an unlawful administration, and how they will protect the Constitution they swore an oath to do.

Are we a nation that allows human rights violations to go unchecked? Are we a nation that allows the foundations of our nation to be interfered with? Are we a nation that cares more for power and prestige than integrity and decency?

The 45th President of the United States has shown who he is. Regardless of political affiliation, we need to decide who we are and what we are willing to do to keep our foundations intact, to keep our country safe, and to ensure we, the torchbearers of freedom, maintain the light against the enemies of democracy.

So help us God.
